So Sundance once again flung open it’s cinematographic loving gates of hipster appreciation and amongst its torrent of films shot at the golden hour rose a short film which would have people running home to hug their laptops and computers. Spike Jones’s I’m Here is a little half hour video depicting two downtown LA Living robots and their love for one another. I say love for one another however watching it one cant help but to think the scales of romance weigh significantly more on one side…
Since going live two weeks ago host website http://www.imheremovie.com/ have had to up its viewing allowance from 500 views a day to 20,000. Damm, that’s some popularity surge right there. Anyway what’s great about I'mHere is the fact the film goes beyond the piece itself, it’s the whole feel and atmosphere created from the moment you reach the site. Choosing the option of watching in “full effect” the site invites you to sign in through Facebook and as you walk towards your seat you pass your Facebook friends sat in the seats next to you! (not so nice if your sat beside your ex or that person you have on your friend list just to laugh at, yeah we all have one right?). This personalises and gives the audience a cinematic experience from the comfort of their own home which is just nice init.
So the short in short is about lonely librarian robot Sheldon, (who constantly looks sad and stoned) meeting the free-spirited (some might say crazy) robot Francesca. She shakes up his world a little bit, introduces him to gigs and starts to give Sheldon life. Evolution is a key thread in this film, the evolution of a person, the evolution of a relationship and the evolution of a race. We meet the robots at a strange time in their lives, some like Sheldon are static whilst others like Fran are beginning to find a purpose and a reason for existence. In my opinion the robots represent people, people without that added extra spark in their life, people who go about living life dull, work in menial jobs and do nothing much else. Francesca is breaking free from this, dancing around and slapping stickers onto walls saying “I’m Here” and onto anything else that tell the world she’s alive.
Although we see Francesca evolving as person in the film, within the realms of the relationship she has with Sheldon she stays very much the same. We see Sheldon falling hard and giving ultimately his all to her. Fran on the other hand,Fran acts as if all that’s changed is she’s met someone else she can play her favourite song too. This breakdown of the relationship was sad to see; the portrayal of one person giving their all to another and ultimately loosing themselves in the process. At times I wanted to climb in the screen, slap Sheldon, tell him to man up and stop being so damm soppy. I mean boy gave the girl his arm because she broke it, if she looked where she was going and wasn’t so damm clumsy maybe it could of all ended on the sunny side of the street. I guess it’s just another case of somebody being in a relationship that necessarily isn’t good for them, yano one that’s mainly one sided, one that looks a bit desperate, one like Beyonce and Jay-z. Yeah you know she worships the ground he walks on…
Needless to say it is most defiantly worthwhile watching this film. The cinematography was cute and you got a real understanding of Sheldon’s love for Fran. I didn’t like Fran, I thought she was a clumsy self involved bitch but hey, the cinematic experience and the piece as a whole was cleverly constructed. Definitely worth a watch or two and also the soundtrack. Boom <3 href="http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd224/Troyfuss/?action=view¤t=imheretop-1.jpg" target="_blank">
